Today was Zoe's last day at Cook Elementary school as therapy dog. For the past 3 years, Zoe's job was to sit on a bean bag chair with students K-2 and listen as they read to her. It's a great way to encourage literacy in our schools. To state the obvious, dogs can't talk, thus, can't make fun of the slower readers. This safety zone encourages children to read out loud which in turn allows the students to improve. The children have loved sitting with her and sharing their stories. I feel privileged to have been a part in this program and now it is time for a little change in our lives. Zoe and I plan to visit a nearby retirement home and cheer up the elderly.
Cook staff, thank you for the gift, Zoe loves the treats!
I encourage all therapy dog teams to pursue schools and library literacy programs as part of their volunteer work.
